Start - The Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts

Start’s mission is to reach out to the many children in the UK who are denied the opportunity to engage with the arts. The Lakeland Arts Trust are working in partnership with St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Ryelands Primary School, Lancaster over the coming academic year to unlock the arts for a new generation. Working with over 327 children aged 7-11 and environmental artist Annie Kent, the children will visit the gallery several times over the next year.

In the autumn term, the Trust’s Learning Assistant was joined by Artist Annie Kent in spending a full day with each KS2 class in school to introduce environmental art and the work of Richard Long.

The children have since made their first visit to the gallery to see the Richard Long exhibition and created sculptures of their own.

Both schools will visit the gallery again in the New Year to see Turner and his Contemporaries: The Hickman Bacon Watercolour Collection and compare different interpretations of the environment in art.
